In honor of Valentine's Day, Gabe and I bought 12 roses and gave them away to 12 strangers (OK, 11 strangers and 1 neighbor who we ran into while we were out). Mostly we gave them to shop clerks, who I know are ridiculously busy on Valentine's. We visited the nail bar, the chocolate shop, the home decor place, the vegan eatery, the clothing boutique and the dog bakery. And at every stop people smiled and told us that we had made their day.
I really want Gabe to understand the spirit of giving, and at times that can be challenging to teach to a 4 year old. But today it was easy. Today he got to see the joy in giving to someone else. I think we are going to make this an annual tradition.
